It’s hard to find motivation to workout at the best of times… and these are not the best of times.
Our gyms have closed, we’re social distancing and shouldn’t really be leaving the house unless completely necessary. So our workouts are mostly confined to the living room.
Without that motivational gym set-up and seeing other people working hard around you, it can be really hard to push yourself. And the sofa is right there… Netflix is calling.
But, with weeks of isolation and limited movement on the horizon, it’s more important than ever that we stay active and keep our bodies as healthy as possible.
We asked David Wiener, Training Specialist at leading health and fitness app Freeletics, for his top motivation tips to keep you pumped even when you’re working out alone, with only your cat for company.
Home workout motivation tips
‘If you find yourself stuck indoors while working from home, it might feel more difficult to stick to a fitness routine,’ David tells Metro.co.uk. ‘But there are lots of things you can do to keep yourself motivated and get your workouts in. Here are some of the best tips.’
Make a schedule and stick to it
Set key times and days during the week of when you want to do you at home work out as it can help you to feel motivated and ensure your work out regularly.
If you do have to miss a workout for some reason, don’t feel disheartened. Just make a real effort to get back on track and stick to the plan you’ve set out for yourself.
If you need inspiration for your workouts Freeletics offers a wide range of exercises that can be done anytime, anywhere.
Find a virtual community
Just because you can’t make it to the gym, doesn’t mean you can’t find some like-minded people to help keep you on track with your workouts.
Using a fitness app to work out will give you access to a huge community of like-minded people who can keep you motivated and on track to ensure you’re progressing towards your goals.
Sharing tips as well as your successes can help you to feel motivated – and who doesn’t like to be congratulated after completing a gruelling workout?
Set goals and allow yourself rewards
Setting goals is a great way to ensure you stay motivated and on track.
For maximum success, take your bigger, overall goal and break it down into smaller, mini goals so that you can celebrate your successes more often.
Allowing yourself small rewards for completing tougher workouts or reaching your goals is also a good way to motivate yourself to continue working out from home.
Keep it varied
One of the easiest ways to lose motivation is by letting your workouts become boring or monotonous.
Variety is key to sticking to a long-term fitness regime. Using advice from an app will ensure your workout schedule includes lots of variety, keeping your body guessing for optimal results.
Put on some music
Playing music can be an amazing mood enhancer. Upbeat, fast-paced music and songs with inspiring lyrics can help to motivate you and put you in the mood to exercise.
Frequently updating your playlist and adding new songs can also keep up your workout motivation, even if it’s just to hear some songs that lift your spirits.
Wear your gym kit
As well as the right music, simply putting on your gym gear can drastically change your motivation, mindset and mood.
First thing in the morning, or whenever you’re tempted to miss a workout, put your gym clothes on. If you look the part, there’s no reason not to exercise, even if it’s just for a little bit.
Especially if you’re isolated and working from home, there’s no reason why you can’t put on your gym gear first thing in the morning. Then you’ll know you’re more likely to exercise by the end of the day.
